Albert Knox the philosopher has said that as people grow up, the ability to wonder is lost. This would mean that many of them are unable to answer one of life’s many mysteries “Why are we here” or “How did we get here?”. In my own personal opinion, I believe that the “ability to wonder” is never lost as people grow older. The fact is that people are too used to the changes in the world to ponder on how it actually began? Or why they are here?. They still wonder about life’s question but decide to leave these questions unanswered as they know they will never find an answer.
As people grow older, they get used to the world and their surroundings. This however does not mean that they do not think about life’s questions. They think about these questions quite a lot during their day to day lives but because of their burden in handling their own lives people tend to stop wondering. This is because people believe that wondering about many different things many distract them living their own lives to the full. Sophie is a good example of this point because as soon as she started wondering about the world, she was not able to concentrate on her schoolwork and her own life. People would not like this to happen, to be able to lose their average lives because of wondering about life’s mysteries.
All people whatever the age have an ability to wonder. People in many parts of the world have already been wondering to find out “if there is a god?”. People think that all questions should be able to have an answer so many people wonder what the answer would be.
In the book “Sophie’s World”, the rabbit would symbolize us “existing deep down in the rabbit’s fur”. We are like a piece of rabbit’s fur, having a choice of either being at the top knowing everything about the world or being at the bottom , curious and wondering about the mysterious of man.
Kids and even adults wonder about the world. I think that the ability to wonder is not dependent on how old people are but from their own upbringing. Children or adults who read books about for example: “superman” will wonder if these feats of strength are possible. In the case of the flying man in “Sophie’s world”, the mother reacted in that way because she has gotten used to the fact that people can’t fly which of course their child has not been able to do.
In conclusion, I personally believe that we never lose the ability to wonder but we trap it at the back of our mind to stop it affecting how we live our life. We can wonder about many different things if we choose too as it our own decision. People wonder about many things because they wish to find an answer to all of life’s mysterious questions in order to understand their duty as inhabitants of earth.
