our ability to wonder

In the book Alberto Knox is Sophie’s philosophy teacher. He states the “it seems as if in the process of growing up we lose the ability to wonder about the world”. I agree with Alberto Knox because as we all grow up we start to take things for granted. Therefore when a magician gets a rabbit out of an empty hat we don’t wonder we just take it for granted. Although a newborn baby would definitely wonder how the rabbit just came out of an empty hat. So as we get older we take in more knowledge and understanding. As a result of this we don’t wonder as much we take things differently.

What Alberto Knox is trying to explain to us is that as we get older and older day-by-day we experience much more and everyday we start to wonder less. This is because we understand how the magician took the rabbit out of the hat that was just shown to us as empty. As we get older we figure out that it’s just a trick.

Another classic example of the difference between how a baby wonders and how an adult wonders is when baby Thomas and mom sees “daddy’s flying”. The babies’ reaction is very happy and joyful seeing his day on the ceiling flying because at his age he doesn’t know that human’s can fly. Although on the other hand his mom does so when she sees her husband flying see screams because she is in shock. This proves as you get older you have more knowledge therefore you wonder less in comparison to when you were a baby.

What do you mean when we 'just take it for granted'? In my opinion I think we will still 'wonder' how it works regardless of our age unless we are magicians ourselves.

I agree with John. I don't think we'll 'take it for granted'. We will still wonder how a rabbit could appear out of an empty hat. "Was the hat not empty in the first place?" "Is it an illusion?" These questions show that we can still wonder about things not matter what age we've become. To emphasize John's point, I'm sure that when I'm a 60-year old woman, I'll still wonder how the rabbit got there in the first place.

I don't really understand when you said "take it for granted", what does it mean? However, I agree with you when you said people don't wonder as much when they get older because they take in more knowledge of the world and begin to understand why we humans are here on this planet.
